Portugal vs Ghana - 2022 World Cup Betting Guide

Portugal will play their first match of the 2022 World Cup against Ghana. The two sides will meet on the 24th of November at Stadium 974 in Doha.

Ghana are the lowest ranking team in the group, sitting in 60th place in the world rankings. They will not be expected to beat Portugal, who sit in the 9th place in the world rankings. Portugal has a strong team that only narrowly missed out on the top spot in their group after they were beaten by Serbia in their last match. The team rarely makes mistakes and is expected to either win this group, or come second to Uruguay, who they will play in the following game. For Ghana, they will play Portugal in their first match and Uruguay in their last, so it is crucial that they try to pick up points in at least one. If they can get a draw in this match, they may have a shot at reaching the round of 16.

Portugal Team Info – Ronaldo’s Last Chance

Portugal have yet to win their first World Cup, and with their current team, they have one of the best opportunities to do so. Their long-time captain and goal scoring forward Cristiano Ronaldo is 37 years old and has scored 117 goals in 189 appearances. He guided Portugal to their first international title in 2016, the European Championships. In the early days of his international career, Portugal had some legendary players in Luis Figo, Deco, Nuno Gomes, and more. The team managed to reach the final of the 2004 European Championship and the semi-finals of the 2006 World Cup, but they lost both, finishing second in the Euros and fourth in the World Cup. Once those players retired, Portugal struggled to produce the same quality of players, and Ronaldo had to take more responsibility in international duties.

Nowadays, Portugal has a truly enviable squad. Longtime manager Fernando Santos has been coaching Portugal since 2014, and he can start Rui Patricio in goal, but has some great backup options in Rui Silva, and Jose Sa. In defence, he can choose to play Pepe, who is 39 years old but shows no signs of slowing down, as well as Danilo Pereira, Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo, Nuno Mendes, Raphael Guerreiro, Nelson Semedo, and many more. In midfield, Portugal can field Joao Moutinho, William Carvalho, Renato Sanches, Joao Mario, Ruben Neves, Bruno Fernandes, or Bernardo Silva, amongst their many options. In attack, they have the legendary Ronaldo, but they also have Diogo Jota, Joao Felix, Goncalo Guedes, Andre Silva, Francisco Trincao, amongst their options.

Ghana Team Info – One of Africa’s Best Prospects

Ghana is one of the most successful African nations in the World Cup. The team managed to reach the quarterfinals in the 2010 World Cup, which was held in Africa. They qualified for the 2022 World Cup after beating Nigeria in the third round of the CAF. Prior to that, they had won Group G in the second round, beating South Africa, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe.

In the current team, there are a number of players who play in some of the biggest leagues in Europe. They have defenders Daniel Amartey, Mohammed Salisu, and Tariq Lamptey; midfielder Thomas Partey; and striker Jordan Ayew, who all play in the English Premier League. They also have numerous players who play for teams in the French Ligue 1, such as striker Kamaldeen Sulemana; midfielder Emmanuel Lomotey; and defenders Nicholas Opoku, Alidu Seidu, Gideon Mensah, and Alexander Djiku.

Jordan Ayew can play alongside his brother, Andre Ayew. Andre is the older brother, and has 23 goals from 106 appearances, whilst Jordan has 19 from 81. They are both the sons of former Ghanaian striker and legendary player, Abedi Pele. Just recently, Inaki Williams announced he would like to represent Ghana at an international level. The Athletic Bilbao player represented Spain in 2016, but he finally chose to play for Ghana, and he is likely to feature in the World Cup.

Portugal vs Ghana Head-to-head

Portugal and Ghana have only played against each other once. That was in the 2014 World Cup group stage. They faced each other in the last game, and Portugal won 2-1. It was not enough for Portugal to reach the round of 16, as they did not have enough points to go ahead of Germany and the United States. For Ghana, they did not win a single match in that group and finished in last place.

Portugal vs Ghana Betting Preview

You can expect Portugal to try to pick up some momentum in this first game with a strong win. There will be plenty of bets available on the match, but you may find that the odds on Portugal to win are relatively short. If you want to increase your potential winnings, you can opt for betting on Portugal to win with a handicap, Portugal to win and Ronaldo to score, Portugal to win and score 3 or more goals, and a lot more. You will also find bets on Ghana, though betting on them to win will come at extremely long odds.

Asian Handicap

When you bet on a team to win with a handicap, then you are betting on them to win by a certain number of goals or more. You can also use handicaps that favour a team, where you bet on the team to beat their opponent if they have a certain number of goals added to their score. Handicaps are used to create longer odds on the favourite to win, whilst favourable handicaps are used to make betting on the underdog more safe, but it shortens their odds.

If you pick Portugal to win and apply a handicap of -2.5 then you will need them to finish the match 3 or more goals clear of Ghana. If you apply a handicap of -2 then you will also need Portugal to win by 3 or more, but if the team only manages to win by 2 goals then the result is deemed a draw and your stake will be refunded.

You can apply a handicap of -2.25 which is a mixture of the two as half your stake will go on a handicap of -2.5 and the other half on a handicap of -2. If Portugal wins the match by 3 or more goals then you will receive your full winnings, but if they only score 2 goals more than Ghana then you will receive half your stake back. This is because the -2.5 part of your bet lost but the -2 part of your bet drew.

Player Goals

You can check out the odds on who will score in the match, from the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes to Jordan Ayew, Inaki Williams, and more. Over/Under Total Goals

This bet requires you to predict how many goals Portugal and Ghana will score in the match. You will have to pick over or under the number of goals specified in a betting line.
