In the lead up to the season the NFL teams are vying to strengthen their teams with free agents, player movements and trading taking place from 16th March. If you know your players and teams then keep an eye on these to help you consider your betting options for the forthcoming season.
A total of 32 teams will come shoulder to shoulder in a battle to earn their place in the biggest American Football game in the world, the Super Bowl. From the 32 teams, 16 of them are from the American Football Conference (AFC) and the other 16 teams are from the National Football Conference (NFC). Together the two football conference leagues make up the National Football League (NFL).
The AFC is further categorised into four individual divisions each containing four teams as follows:
AFC North:
Baltimore Ravens: Established 1996, the Baltimore Ravens have featured in 13 NFL playoffs and won the Super Bowl twice, the last of which was the 2012 season.
Cincinnati Bengals: Since being established in 1967 the Bengals have been losing finalists three times in the Super Bowl with their last appearance in the 1988 season losing both times to the San Francisco 49ers. They are the current AFC North champions and lost in the Super Bowl last season.
Cleveland Browns: A team that was established in 1944, the Cleveland Browns have never featured in the Super Bowl. They have made the playoffs as many as 29 times, the most recent in the 2020 season.
Pittsburgh Steelers: The most successful of the AFC North teams, but the oldest in the AFC North having been founded in 1933. The joint equal record winner of the Super Bowl, the last being in 2008 when they beat the Arizona Cardinals.
AFC East:
Buffalo Bills: Winner of the AFC East for the past two seasons the Buffalo Bills hold a joint equal record of being a Super Bowl losing finalist on four occasions, the last being in the 1993 season.
Miami Dolphins: Formed in 1965, the Miami Dolphins were hugely competitive during the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. They have not made the playoffs since 2016 but are two times Super Bowl winners, the last being the season commencing 1972.
New England Patriots: The most successful of the AFC East teams the Patriots have won the Super Bowl a record equalling six times and losing finalists on five occasions. Their last Super Bowl appearance was in 2018.
New York Jets: Established in 1959 they have only made one Super Bowl appearance. They beat the Baltimore Colts to win the third Super Bowl of the 1968 season.
AFC South:
Houston Texans: Only established in 1999, they have never made it to a Super Bowl. Their most recent playoff appearance was in the 2019 season.
Indianapolis Colts: A team formed in 1953 they are the most successful team of the AFC South. They are two-time Super Bowl winners and twice beaten finalists. The last time they won was in 2006 when they beat the Chicago Bears.
Jacksonville Jaguars: Another young NFL team that was established in 1993. They have never made it to a Super Bowl with their last playoff appearance coming in the 2017 season.
Tennessee Titans: The Tennessee Titans were founded in 1959 and have only made one Super Bowl appearance losing to St Louis Rams in the 1999 season. However, they won the AFC South last year.
AFC West:
Denver Broncos: A team formed in 1959 the Broncos have won the Super Bowl three times and been losing finalists on five occasions. Their last win was Super Bowl 50, where they defeated the Carolina Panthers. Since then, they have not made the playoffs.
Kansas City Chiefs: The current champions of AFC West, they have been two-time winners and two-time losers of the Super Bowl. Their last win came as recently as the 2019 season.
Las Vegas Raiders: A team founded in 1960 the Las Vegas Raiders have a credible three Super Bowl wins and ended up runners-up on two occasions. Their last Super Bowl win was in the 1983 season when they beat the Washington Redskins.
Los Angeles Charges: Formerly known as the San Diego Chargers, the Los Angeles Chargers have only one Superbowl appearance in their history, losing to the San Francisco 49ers in the 1994 season.

NFC North:
Chicago Bears: Formed in 1920 the Chicago Bears have won one Super Bowl in 1985 when they defeated the New England Patriots. They have also lost one Super Bowl in the 2006 season, when they were beaten by the Indianapolis Colts.
Detroit Lions: Founded in 1930 the Detroit Lions have never made an appearance at a Super Bowl and last qualified for the playoffs in the 2016 season.
Green Bay Packers: The most successful team in the NFC North when considering the number of Super Bowl appearances and wins. They have won the Super Bowl four times and been a losing finalist once. Their wins came in the seasons of 1966, 1967, 1996 and 2010. They are the current NFC North champions.
Minnesota Vikings: The Minnesota Vikings can be considered the most successful team of the NFC North having won the title 20 times. They have suffered bad luck in Super Bowl having lost on four occasions.
NFC East:
Dallas Cowboys: The joint second most successful team by number of Super Bowl appearances having played in it eight times and winning on five occasions. Their golden era came in the 1990’s when they won the Super Bowl three times. They are the most successful NFC East team with 24 titles and they are the reigning champions.
New York Giants: The New York Giants have made five Super Bowl appearances, winning it four times. Their last win came in 2011 season when they beat the New England Patriots. Their last playoff appearance was in the 2016 season.
Philadelphia Eagles: Established in 1933 the Philadelphia Eagles last won the Super Bowl in the 2017 season, when they defeated the New England Patriots 41 – 33. In total they have made a total of three Super Bowl appearances.
Washington Commanders: Founded in 1932, the Washington Commanders have made five Super Bowl appearances, winning three times. Their last win came in the 1991 NFL season when they were known as the Washington Redskins.
NFC South:
Atlanta Falcons: Having not made the playoffs since the 2017 season the Atlanta Falcons have made two Super Bowl appearances, the last of which was in the 2016 season. On both visits to the Super Bowl, they lost.
Carolina Panthers: Another team that has made two Super Bowl appearances and lost on both occasions, the last of which was in the 2015 season. Their last appearance in the playoffs came in 2017.
New Orleans Saints: In their sole visit To the Super Bowl in the 2009 season, the New Orleans Saints defeated the Indianapolis Colts. Last season was the first time they did not qualify for the Playoffs after four consecutive appearances between 2017 – 2020. They have won the NFC South a record seven times.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the current champions of the NFC South. They have made two Super Bowl appearances last winning convincingly in 2020 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
NFC West:
Arizona Cardinals: The Arizona Cardinals have made only one Super Bowl appearance in the 2008 season where they lost marginally to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Los Angeles Rams: The current Super Bowl champions having beaten the Cincinnati Bengals 23 – 20 in a closely contested game. The Los Angeles Rams have made five Super Bowl appearances, winning it twice. They are the current champions of the NFC West.
San Francisco 49ers: The most successful team of the NFC West are the 49ers who have played their way to seven Super Bowl appearances, winning five times. They were hugely successful during the 1980’s. They have won the most NFC West titles with a total of 20.
Seattle Seahawks: The Seattle Seahawks have won the Super Bowl once in 2013 out of three appearances.
